Phyllis Mae Ross Jonas , 92 of La Crosse, WI passed away September 2, 2017 at Brookdale Assisted Living in La Crosse.
She was born in East Chicago, IN, on April 27, 1925 to Lawrence and Ruby (Sherman) Ross. She graduated from Hammond High School in 1943. Phyllis attended one year of nurses training at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago, IL. On July 13, 1944, she married John D. Bohanan. She was first employed by the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad. The family then made several moves including Buffalo, NY and Detroit MI. When her marriage ended in 1970, she moved back to Munster, IN and resumed working for the IHB Railroad until she retired in 1988. On Oct. 2, 1982 she married Delmer A. Jonas. They lived in Blue Island, IL until 1997 when they moved to Holmen, WI.
Phyllis was a deeply religious woman. She was compassionate and caring to those around her. There were always cookies ready for the neighborhood children. When her husband was in the nursing home with dementia, she was always at his side. Even though she always wished she had completed her nursing program she used her loving nature to care for others in many ways.
Phyllis is survived by her son Alan R. (Sally) Bohanan of West Branch, IA; stepson David A. (Barbara) Jonas of Champaign, IL; stepdaughter Dea Marie (Ronald) Oleson of La Crosse, WI; seven grandchildren, Nathaniel (Kathy) Bohanan of Fishers, IN, Elizabeth (Jonathan) Matthews of San Diego, CA, Daniel A. Jonas of South Elgin, IL, Jonathan E. Jonas of Champaign, IL, Brett C. (Amalia) Oleson of St. Joseph, MI, Jennifer Peck of Boulder, CO and Emily Peck of West Branch, IA; nine great grandchildren Lilly, Boston and Ruby Bohanan; Allison and Jessica Matthews,Savannah Garner, Mitchell and Brooke Oleson and Lily Bohlen; cousin Kent (Susan) Barta of Madison, WI.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents.
A visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 pm Tuesday September 5 at Dickinson Funeral home 401 Main Street Onalaska, WI.
Funeral services will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home (8178 Cline Ave, Schererville, Indiana) on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.
Phyllis’s family would like to thank the staff of Brookdale for the loving care she received during her stay there. Also, we would like to thank the Hospice staff especially her nurse that made every effort to see to her comfort.
